There Is No God

GEORGIE

After Alexandre was released from the hospital that afternoon, Paul drove Georgie and him straight to the airport and the Gulfstream jet. The Boeing had been sent to Milan to ferry the rest of the band either to New Jersey to record the new album or to Rome if that concert were rescheduled.

No matter what, Georgie wasn’t going to play on that album, but her songs would be on it, or at least her minor contributions to songs that Alex had written.

Or Xan had written.

Or maybe Alexandre. She didn’t know which one, really.

Paul caught Georgie’s eye in the rearview mirror several times during the drive, his brown eyes narrowed.

They settled into the wide seats while Guillaume bustled around, plying Alexandre with every tidbit that they had on board because he shouldn’t drink alcohol yet.

Guillaume made sashimi, phenomenally tender and fresh sashimi, because Alexandre mentioned that he felt like he needed protein.

They were flying out of Switzerland on no notice, and Guillaume conjured up phenomenal sashimi. Georgie wondered if there was a fish tank in the belly of the airplane as she slurped the cool fish, almost buttery in taste, served on ice and greens.

Alexandre held her hand for most of the short flight, but he dozed off somewhere over France. His fingers loosened.

Paul was right beside Georgie, tapping her shoulder and bobbing his head toward the back of the plane. She followed him, and he bent his head and whispered, “Is it true? Is Christine right?”

“About his hand?” she clarified.

“Yes, about his hand!” Paul glanced up the long tube of the plane to see if his whisper had awakened Alexandre, but his blond head, just visible over the seatbacks, was tilted and leaning on the porthole window.

Georgie didn’t know any way to sugarcoat it. “With physical therapy, he’ll probably regain some range of motion. He won’t ever play the violin again, not like he did. I don’t think he’ll even be able to manage the bass guitar.”

Paul leaned against the cabinets back there and covered his face with his hands. Brown bruises stained his knuckles, too. “Mon Dieu.”

“I’m sorry—” she started.

“It is better that Adrien didn’t live to see this.”

Georgie stepped backward, and her horror must have shown on her face. No. No, it wasn’t better at all.

Paul whispered, “We were with him so that he could keep playing and performing. It’s the reason we left our jobs at Interpol and our families and our homes. We believed in him, and then we hoped that he would go back to serious music someday.”

Georgie felt tears heating her eyes and started getting pissed. She choked out, “My God, Paul.”

“Non. If this is what happens to him, if this is how it ends, if he never plays the violin again, there is no God.” Paul rubbed his face and dropped his fists to his legs. “I am sorry, miss. I am distraught. I need to make sure that security is in place for His Grace. The last thing we need is some pompous conductor harassing him right now.
